Singer Sabrina Carpenter has been granted a temporary restraining order against a man accused of stalking her and attempting to force entry into her California home, according to court documents.
The Los Angeles County court on Monday (2 June) ordered William Applegate, 31, to stay at least 100 yards away from the Hollywood Hills residence Carpenter shares with her sister and her sister’s partner.
“His pattern of stalking, trespassing, and surveillance has caused me severe and ongoing emotional distress,” Carpenter said in a signed declaration submitted to the court.
“I am in fear [of] what he may do if he is not restrained by this Court.”
Court filings state that Applegate approached Carpenter’s front door on 23 May and tried to force it open in what was described as a “deeply alarming” incident.
Ring camera footage reportedly shows a man attempting to open the door before being confronted by a security guard. The guard ordered him to leave, but he allegedly refused, claiming the singer was expecting him, a statement the court described as “outrageous and entirely false.”
Applegate was later arrested on suspicion of trespassing, a misdemeanour offence, but allegedly returned to the area days later.
Detectives said Applegate had been parking in the neighbourhood since 20 April and gradually moving closer to the property.
“Sabrina Carpenter,” wrote Detective Peter Doomanis of the Los Angeles Police Department, said the behaviour reflected “a disturbing and irrational fixation” consistent with known stalking patterns.
Carpenter said the conduct represented one of the most serious violations of her privacy and personal safety.
A follow-up hearing is scheduled for 17 June, while a separate criminal court hearing related to the trespassing arrest will take place the following day.
The restraining order remains in effect as proceedings continue.
