Strong winds have intensified wildfires in western Türkiye’s Izmir province for a second day, forcing evacuations as over 1,000 personnel work to contain the flames, officials said on Monday.

Wildfires continued to burn for a second consecutive day in
Türkiye’s western Izmir province, with blazes in the Kuyucak and Doğanbey areas spreading rapidly overnight due to winds reaching 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph), according to Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı.

Speaking from Izmir on Monday, Yumaklı confirmed the evacuation of four villages and two neighbourhoods as fire crews intensified efforts to contain the flames. Over 1,000 firefighters, supported by helicopters, fire-fighting aircraft, and ground vehicles, were deployed to battle the fires.

Local media aired dramatic images of smoke-covered hills, scorched trees, and emergency teams using tractors and aerial units to douse the flames.

Türkiye’s coastal and forested regions have increasingly suffered from destructive wildfires in recent years, a trend that experts attribute to the rising temperatures and prolonged droughts linked to climate change.
