Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was assassinated just six days after taking office
The newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Mexico’s violence-plagued Guerrero state ,Alejandro Arcos, was assassinated on Sunday, just six days after taking office, according to the state’s governor. His death follows the murder of Francisco Tapia, the city’s newly appointed government secretary, who was shot just three days earlier.
Assassination happened only after six days after he took office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico.
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado said in a statement shared on social media: "His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation".
Guerrero's state attorney general's office also said it was investigating his murder.
The official confirmation followed the circulation of photos on the messaging app WhatsApp , showing a severed head resting on a pick-up truck, which appeared to belongs to Arcos.
