Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan discuss Iran-Israel tensions and OIC meeting
Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan’s foreign ministers have held talks amid escalating regional tensions following the Iran-Israel confrontation.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed her position during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.
Speaking from the G7 summit in Canada, von der Leyen said that while she believes diplomacy is the best path forward, she recognizes Israel’s right to defend itself, citing Iran’s non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog.
“Iran is the principal source of regional instability,” she said, underscoring Tehran’s growing influence in regional conflicts.
Von der Leyen also connected the threats faced by Israel and Ukraine, highlighting the use of Iranian-made drones and ballistic missiles in both conflicts. She said this shared threat would be a key topic at the G7 summit, along with Russia’s war in Ukraine.
