A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck central Peru, killing at least one person and causing damage across the capital, Lima.
At least one person has died after a wall collapsed in Lima’s Independencia district when a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Peru, shaking the capital and surrounding areas.
Authorities confirmed landslides in several nearby districts, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the quake’s epicenter was located about 30 kilometres southwest of the port city of Callao and that it happened Sunday morning at 11:35am local time in the Pacific Ocean.
Structural damage was reported in parts of Lima, including the partial collapse of a dining area roof at a shopping mall.
Public transport services, including sections of the Lima Metro Line, were temporarily suspended for safety inspections.
