India has launched a full investigation into the fatal crash of Air India Flight AI171, as officials recover the black box and initiate extended safety checks on the country’s entire Boeing 787 fleet.

The black box from the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad has been recovered, India’s aviation minister announced on Saturday (June 14). He stated that the government will explore all possible causes behind the tragic incident earlier this week.

“At the same time, we believe there is a need for enhanced monitoring of the Boeing 787 fleet,” said Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu during a press briefing. “Therefore, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been instructed to initiate extended surveillance of all 34 Boeing 787 aircraft currently in operation.”

Air India flight AI171, carrying 242 passengers, was headed to London Gatwick from Ahmedabad when it crashed shortly after take-off on Thursday (June 12), striking nearby buildings.

By Saturday, the death toll had climbed to 270, including individuals who were on the ground at the time of the crash.
