UK to become ‘AI maker not taker,’ says Sir Keir Starmer

The UK aims to become a global leader in artificial intelligence rather than just a user, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced at London Tech Week.

He unveiled millions of pounds in new funding to train students and workers in AI skills.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, who spoke alongside Starmer, predicted that within the next decade, “every industry in the UK will be a tech industry” driven by AI. He highlighted the UK’s status as one of the world’s richest AI communities and the third-largest AI investor after the US and China.

However, Huang warned the UK currently lacks the infrastructure needed to become an AI superpower, emphasizing the need to build AI supercomputers domestically. Doing so would attract startups and strengthen the AI ecosystem.

Starmer announced a £187 million "TechFirst" scheme to equip secondary school pupils with AI skills and a broader government-backed program, supported by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, IBM, Nvidia, BT, and Amazon, to train 7.5 million workers by 2030 with free AI training materials.

At a private Chequers reception, Starmer met with leading tech figures, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities.
