South African authorities have confirmed the deaths of a pilot and two passengers after a light aircraft crashed on Sunday in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

The bodies of a pilot and two passengers were recovered on Monday following the crash of a light aircraft that went missing a day earlier in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, authorities said.

The aircraft had departed from Durban's Virginia airport around 3 p.m. local time (1300GMT) on Sunday but failed to reach its destination, prompting a search and rescue operation led by the South African Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC).

In a statement on Monday, the ARCC said the wreckage was located just before midday in a primary search area west of Greytown.

All three people on board were confirmed dead. No further details were immediately released about the identities of the victims or the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
