China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced its participation in a series of senior officials' meetings on East Asian cooperation, to be held in Penang, Malaysia, from June 10 to 11. These meetings, hosted by Malaysia as the rotating ASEAN chair, include the ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials’ Meeting, the East Asia Summit Senior Officials’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Regional Forum Senior Officials’ Meeting.
Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong will lead the Chinese delegation.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian, the meetings will provide a platform for participating parties to "exchange views on advancing cooperation under those mechanisms and international and regional issues of mutual interest." The discussions will revolve around the overarching theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability," setting the stage for the upcoming leaders' meetings and foreign ministers' meetings on East Asian cooperation later this year.
China expressed its anticipation for "in-depth communication at the SOM meetings to further build consensus, focus on cooperation, and inject more stability and positive energy into regional development."
