A massive rescue operation is underway after explosions and fire broke out on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship on route to Mumbai, forcing crew members to abandon the vessel.

The Indian Navy launched an emergency rescue operation on Monday after explosions and fires erupted aboard the cargo vessel WAN HAI 503, located approximately 144 kilometers off the coast of Kerala, officials confirmed.

The incident caused at least 40 containers to fall into the Arabian Sea, while several crew members were forced to jump overboard to escape the flames, according to a Defense Ministry spokesperson cited by NDTV.

The 270-meter-long vessel, sailing under a Singaporean flag, departed Colombo, Sri Lanka, on June 7 and was scheduled to reach Mumbai on June 10. It was carrying over 650 containers and had 22 crew members on board at the time of the accident.

Following immediate instructions from higher authorities, the Indian Navy initiated measures to airlift the crew and contain the situation. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the incident and coordinating with national agencies.

As of now, there is no official report of casualties, and efforts to bring the situation under control are ongoing. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.
