Dutch snap elections set for Oct. 29 after coalition collaps

The Netherlands will hold snap general elections on October 29, following the collapse of the ruling coalition triggered by the withdrawal of support from the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Geert Wilders.

Caretaker Interior Minister Judith Uitermark confirmed the date on Friday via X, stating that preparations are already underway to ensure the election runs smoothly.

The ruling coalition — made up of the VVD (conservatives), New Social Contract (NSC), and the farmers' party BBB — fell apart on June 3 after it failed to reach a consensus with Wilders on asylum and migration policy. Wilders had demanded sweeping restrictions, which proved unacceptable to the other parties.

The upcoming vote will reshape the Dutch political landscape as parties prepare to form a new coalition amid deep divisions over immigration and governance.
