EU regrets US decision to double steel import tariffs

The European Commission voiced strong regret over the United States’ decision to raise tariffs on imported steel to 50%, warning the move adds uncertainty to the global economy.

The European Commission sharply criticized the U.S. decision to double tariffs on imported steel, calling it a move that threatens economic stability and hinders efforts toward a negotiated trade solution.

“We strongly regret the announced increase of U.S. tariffs on steel imports from 25% to 50%,” a European Commission spokesperson said in a statement.

The announcement followed U.S. President Donald Trump's declaration that Washington would raise duties on foreign steel and aluminum, escalating an already tense trade environment. The tariff hike is expected to place further pressure on global steel producers and could deepen trade frictions with key allies.

“This decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” the spokesperson added. “The tariff increase also undermines ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution.”
