Germany will deliver an additional €5 billion in military aid to Ukraine, the country’s defense ministry announced on Wednesday, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with top German officials in Berlin.
The support package, which comes amid ongoing Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, will be drawn from previously approved funding by the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house of parliament.
Berlin cited the “massive destruction of civilian infrastructure” and rising civilian casualties from Russian attacks as the reason for the renewed support. The announcement marks one of Germany’s largest military commitments to Ukraine since the start of the war.
