At least six people, including children, drowned when a migrant boat capsized near Spain’s Canary Islands as rescuers attempted to guide it to port.
Tragedy struck off the coast of El Hierro in Spain’s Canary Islands as a migrant boat carrying around 180 people capsized near La Restinga harbour. Emergency services reported at least six deaths after the vessel overturned while being escorted by a rescue ship. The incident occurred when passengers, reportedly panicking, shifted to one side of the overcrowded boat, causing it to tip.
Rescue crews threw life rings as survivors tried to climb aboard the maritime rescue vessel. A medical helicopter was deployed to assist in pulling migrants from the water.
Though migrant arrivals to the Canaries have dropped in 2025, 2024 saw a record surge via the treacherous Atlantic route. Most departed from countries like Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia in unsafe vessels vulnerable to rough sea conditions.
