Pakistan’s army chief General Asim Munir has been promoted to the ceremonial rank of field marshal, the first such promotion in nearly 60 years.

General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, has been elevated to the rank of field marshal, marking the first time since 1965 that a Pakistani general has received this five-star ceremonial title. The promotion, approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet, recognizes Munir’s strategic leadership and role in ensuring national security during recent military clashes with India.

Despite the promotion, Munir will continue serving as the army chief. Additionally, the cabinet extended the service of Pakistan Air Force chief Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, though the duration of his extension was not disclosed. Munir’s term was extended to five years last November, beyond the usual three-year term, and he called the promotion an honor for Pakistan’s armed forces and the nation as a whole.
