EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on 20th May. The upcoming Foreign Affairs Council will be chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The Council's morning session will convene EU Defence Ministers, followed by a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers in the afternoon.
Foreign Affairs Council with Defence Ministers will discuss EU military support for Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, via videoconference, and in the presence of the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“Russia is still not ready for a ceasefire and genuine peace talks. That is why it is important for the EU continue to weaken Russia’s war economy with a new sanctions package. Finland is proposing extensive tariffs on Russian imports alongside sanctions. We must make Putin change his calculations on the advantages of continuing the war,” says Finland's Political Secretary of State Pasi Rajala.
In addition, EU ministers will hold a discussion on the implementation of the White Paper for European Defence - Readiness 2030, and the ReArm Europe Plan.
In the afternoon, EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss the Russia's war against Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha, via videoconference.
They also will discuss the latest developments in the Middle East and in Syria.
