Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on May 16 that his country has started the process of joining the New Development Bank of BRICS.

“We are beginning [the process of] accession to the New Development Bank,” Petro wrote on X.

He is currently in Shanghai holding talks with the bank’s chief, Dilma Rousseff. Following these negotiations, Petro may sign several investment agreements, including a proposed railway project linking the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Earlier, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo expressed the country’s strong interest in BRICS and its desire to join the group.
