An Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov visited the Syrian Arab Republic on 4 May, following the instruction of President Ilham Aliyev. The visit aimed to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts and expand bilateral cooperation in areas such as the economy, energy, culture, and education.
The delegation was received by Syria’s interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, who recalled his recent meeting with President Aliyev during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum and expressed appreciation for the swift Azerbaijani engagement. Al-Sharaa highlighted the shared experience of territorial integrity challenges faced by both nations and praised Azerbaijan’s reconstruction model as a valuable example for Syria.
President Al-Sharaa also thanked Azerbaijan for the humanitarian assistance sent earlier this year.
Deputy PM Sharifov conveyed a letter from President Aliyev, which included an invitation for the Syrian head of state to visit Azerbaijan. He reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s political support for Syria’s transitional government and noted the recent reopening of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Damascus after a 12-year break.
Both sides discussed potential avenues for Azerbaijan’s support in Syria’s rehabilitation process.
During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation held meetings with several high-ranking Syrian officials, including Foreign Minister Asad Hasan Al-Shibani, Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal Al-Shaar, Minister of Energy Mohammad Al-Bashir, Minister of Culture Muhammad Yasin Saleh, and Minister of Education Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko. The discussions focused on enhancing sectoral cooperation and identifying specific joint initiatives.
