Azerbaijan has reaffirmed its support for Syria’s recovery efforts through a high-level visit to Damascus, where officials explored new opportunities for cooperation and conveyed a message from President Ilham Aliyev to Syria’s interim leadership.
An Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov visited the Syrian Arab Republic on 4 May, following the instruction of President Ilham Aliyev. The visit aimed to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts and expand bilateral cooperation in areas such as the economy, energy, culture, and education.
The delegation was received by Syria’s interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, who recalled his recent meeting with President Aliyev during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum and expressed appreciation for the swift Azerbaijani engagement. He reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s political support for Syria’s transitional government and noted the recent reopening of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Damascus after a 12-year break.
Both sides discussed potential avenues for Azerbaijan’s support in Syria’s rehabilitation process.
