Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu appeared poised to secure the most votes in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, 24 November. The Black Sea state's strong support for Ukraine could be influenced by the outcome of the second round on 8 December.
Exit polls showed Social Democrat Ciolacu, 56, leading comfortably with 25%, while the identity of his runoff opponent remained uncertain. Centre-right candidate Elena Lasconi polled at 18%, closely followed by hard-right contenders Calin Georgescu and George Simion with 16% and 15% respectively.
Exit polls do not account for votes from the large Romanian diaspora, where Simion, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, enjoys significant support. By 2100 GMT, approximately 64% of votes had been counted, with a clear result expected in the coming hours.
