An al-Qaeda-affiliated group has claimed responsibility for deadly raids on two military posts in Benin, saying 70 soldiers were killed. The attacks highlight the growing reach of jihadist violence from the Sahel into West Africa’s coastal states.

The al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for killing 70 soldiers during attacks on two military outposts in Benin, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.

Benin and neighboring Togo have faced a growing number of militant assaults in recent years, as jihadist groups affiliated with Islamic State and al-Qaeda push southward from the Sahel region.
