Russia has condemned Estonia’s new naval rules as provocative, warning of a proportional response after the seizure of a sanctioned vessel linked to Moscow’s “shadow fleet.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Thursday criticized Estonia’s recent legal amendments permitting its navy to use force against foreign vessels, calling the move provocative and a threat to maritime safety and security in the Baltic Sea.
Zakharova warned that Russia would respond proportionately to any acts of aggression against its ships.
Her remarks follow Estonia’s seizure last week of the Kiwala, a vessel under EU sanctions since February and allegedly part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”—a term used by Western nations to describe ships employed by Moscow to evade sanctions, often operating without oversight or conventional Western insurance.
