Six people have died and several are missing after a violent clash between two mining groups in Bolivia, highlighting growing tensions over gold mining in the region.

A violent confrontation between two groups of Bolivian miners over the exploitation of small gold deposits has resulted in six deaths and several people being reported missing, a representative from a mining cooperative confirmed on Thursday.

The incident began early in the morning in the municipality of Sorata, located 150 km north of the capital, La Paz, according to an initial report from the Bolivian Police.
