Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to discuss migration and security challenges.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum said the meeting would focus on bilateral cooperation in both areas.

Noem’s visit—her first to the region—comes as the Trump administration places increasing emphasis on Latin America in its efforts to ramp up deportations and deter northbound migration.

In recent months, Mexico has taken several steps in exchange for delayed U.S. sanctions. These include deploying 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, reporting intensified crackdowns on drug labs, and extraditing 29 top cartel figures long sought by the U.S.

Noem’s stop in Mexico concluded her Latin American tour, which also included visits to El Salvador—where she inspected a maximum-security prison holding over 200 migrants deported from the U.S.—and Colombia, where she held talks with President Gustavo Petro.
