U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized Denmark’s handling of Greenland’s security during a visit to the U.S. base at Pituffik.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance has criticized Denmark during a visit to Greenland, claiming it has failed to adequately protect the semi-autonomous territory and its people from incursions by China and Russia.
While Vance stated that the United States has no immediate plans to expand its military presence on the ground in Greenland, he said Washington would invest in resources, including additional naval ships.
He also expressed his expectation that Greenlanders would eventually choose independence from Denmark through self-determination, which he indicated would be a prerequisite for any future direct dialogue with the United States.
Vance made his remarks during a visit to the U.S. military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland. His comments came just hours after a new coalition government, composed of multiple parties and committed to maintaining ties with Denmark for now, was introduced in the capital, Nuuk.
