A prominent U.S. delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, will visit Greenland this week, highlighting President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in annexing the strategic Danish territory.
Accompanied by White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the delegation will tour the Pituffik space base, an essential U.S. military installation. The team will also participate in cultural events, including Greenland’s national dogsled race sponsored by the U.S.
White House spokesman Brian Hughes described the trip as an opportunity to build partnerships while respecting Greenland's self-determination and promoting economic cooperation.
Trump has repeatedly emphasised the benefits of Greenland’s strategic location and vast mineral resources since resuming office in January. However, both Greenlandic and Danish officials oppose the proposed annexation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed Denmark's commitment to sovereignty and cooperation, insisting any dialogue involving Greenland must closely involve Danish and Greenlandic authorities.
Greenland's caretaker government, following recent elections favouring gradual independence from Denmark, has not yet commented publicly on the visit.
