Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu arrived in North Korea today amid the US-Russia talks on Ukrainian peace settelement.
Shoigu is scheduled to meet with leader Kim Jong-un and other North Korean officials, tass reported.
In June of last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang and signed a "comprehensive strategic partnership treaty" with Kim Jong-un, the Chairperson of the State Affairs Commission. This agreement has been regarded as raising bilateral relations to the level of a military alliance.
Putin’s visit is the latest in a string of high-level exchanges between North Korea and Russia, reflecting their strengthening relationship. Pyongyang has reportedly deployed thousands of troops to support Moscow in its war against Ukraine.
The latest visit also takes place against the backdrop of potential changes in the Russia-Ukraine war, as U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed over the phone earlier this week.
