Authorities say a failure at the Diezmero substation led to a significant loss of power generation in western Cuba, resulting in the failure of the National Electric System. Internet service has also been affected.
This is the latest in a series of power failures on the island, which continues to struggle with natural disasters and economic turmoil. Cuban officials have previously blamed U.S. economic sanctions—tightened under the previous administration of President Donald Trump—for further crippling the country’s already fragile energy sector.
Officials say efforts to restore electricity are underway.
