Security forces clashed with demonstrators in Buenos Aires on Wednesday during a protest led by retirees and joined by football fans, unions, and progressive groups, leaving at least 20 injured.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd, which included elderly protesters, women, and young people. At least 103 people were detained.

Among the injured was Argentine photojournalist Pablo Grillo, who was hospitalized after being hit in the head by a gas canister. Some football fans threw objects at police, who responded with shields. Around 800 officers were deployed to suppress the protest.

Retirees, who regularly demonstrate outside Congress for better pensions and living conditions, were joined by fans from major football clubs chanting support. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich had announced the deployment of armed forces earlier in the day.

Clashes escalated near Congress in the evening as police fired rubber bullets and tear gas while protesters threw objects in response.
