Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink to India after months of rivalry. The deal, pending government approval, provides Starlink with a low-cost entry, tapping into India's booming satellite market while boosting Jio’s reach.
In an unexpected move, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink satellite internet to India. The partnership comes after months of tension between the two billionaires over the allocation of airwaves for satellite internet. Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecom operator, will now stock Starlink equipment in its retail stores, giving the service direct distribution points across the country.
Despite their past disagreements, the deal represents a strategic move for both companies. Starlink aims to tap into India’s rapidly growing satellite service sector, set to expand at 36% annually. While the deal is subject to government approval, it highlights the growing competition in India’s telecom and satellite industries.
The partnership with Reliance Jio follows a similar agreement with Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom player. With Starlink waiting for licenses to operate commercially, the collaboration with Jio helps overcome regulatory hurdles, providing a low-cost entry model for the service in India.
As the Indian market expands, both companies are poised to benefit from this shift from rivalry to cooperation.
