The leaders of the 27 European Union countries will come together for a special summit on March 6 to discuss next steps for Ukraine and Europe's security. The Special European Council will take place in Brussels.

To prepare for the Special European Council, European Council President Antonio Costa is organizing a videoconference of the members of the EU Council, today, "to hear a debriefing from President Emmanuel Macron on his recent visit to Washington DC," - Costa said in social media post.

“We are living a defining moment for Ukraine and European security,” Costa posted. “In my consultations with European leaders, I’ve heard a shared commitment to meet those challenges at EU level: strengthening European Defence and contributing decisively to peace on our continent and long-term security of Ukraine.”

While speaking at the International summit on the support of Ukraine, President António Costa called Russia "a threat to the international rules-based order" and stated that no credible and successful negotiation, no lasting peace, without Ukraine and without the European Union.

The EU and its member states are committed to spending more and better together on defence. In recent years, both the total defence expenditure of EU member states and defence investments have increased significantly: in 2024, member states spent an estimated €326 billion on defence, while defence investments surged to €102 billion.
