Germany heads to the polls today after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition, with conservatives leading in surveys.

Germany is voting in snap elections today after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition last November due to a budget dispute. Polls are now open across the country, with over 59 million eligible voters electing 630 members of the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house of parliament.

Four main contenders are in the race for leadership: Chancellor Olaf Scholz, opposition leader Friedrich Merz, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, and Alternative for Germany’s Alice Weidel. Opinion polls show the conservative Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) leading with around 30%, while the far-right AfD stands at 20%.

Exit poll results are expected late Monday, with final results anticipated within a week.
