A 14-year-old boy has died, and four others have been critically injured following a knife attack near the main square of Villach, Austria.
Police have arrested the suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker. Authorities believe the attack was random, though the motive remains unclear. They have not ruled out the possibility of a second attacker.
According to police, a delivery driver helped prevent further casualties by driving toward the suspect.
The governor of Carinthia, Peter Kaiser, has expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.
Data from the Austrian Ministry of Interior shows that 24,941 foreigners applied for asylum in Austria in 2024, with the largest number of applicants coming from Syria, followed by Afghanistan.
