North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has visited a newly opened defence museum displaying weapons developed under his leadership, including an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States.
State media KCNA showed Kim at the Defence Revolution Museum alongside his daughter, known as Kim Ju Ae, and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. The visit took place on Sunday and was reported on Tuesday.
The museum features a range of North Korean weapons, from drones to the Hwasong-20 ICBM. Images appeared to show a multiple-warhead design on the missile and a world map indicating ranges extending beyond the U.S. mainland.
Defence analyst Shin Jong-woo said the exhibition appeared intended to highlight North Korea’s military development and could serve as a strategic message ahead of a possible North Korea-U.S. summit.
The visit came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said he might meet Kim during a planned trip to Asia. Trump is billed to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China in mid-November.
North Korea separately said it had test-fired a tactical ballistic missile on Monday to confirm a technical upgrade to an unspecified component.
KCNA said the upgrade was an important step in improving the performance of the country’s offensive weapons systems, without providing further details.
South Korea’s military said North Korea had fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast. It was Pyongyang’s fourth missile launch in a month, following South Korea’s recent test of a hypersonic missile.
The museum visit and latest missile test come amid continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula and ahead of the possibility of renewed contact between Kim and Trump.
