Polish police have detained a man suspected of planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, prompting security services to convene a special meeting on Sunday.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski told state broadcaster TVP Info that the suspect, a man in his 60s, was detained in the Lower Silesia region of southern Poland.
“Security services tracked him down through a detailed analysis of content posted online,” Kierwinski said.
Special services spokesperson Jacek Dobrzynski said authorities had received information about a potential attack and were treating the threat as “deadly serious”.
“We are talking about a high probability of these threats being carried out,” he told reporters, without providing further details.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka said an email containing information about the potential attack had been forwarded to police by the State Protection Service, which is responsible for protecting ministers.
Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked police for their “swift and decisive” response in posts on X.
The threat comes as Poland remains on alert amid a series of security concerns, including violence in schools and risks linked to the country's proximity to Russia's war against Ukraine.
Authorities are also investigating a wave of violence in schools that resulted in the death of a caretaker on Thursday.
Although violent crime is relatively rare in Poland, the country is deeply polarised politically and has faced previous threats against senior politicians. In August, police detained a 23-year-old man accused of calling for the assassination of senior Polish politicians. In 2024, Tusk said he had received threats following an assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the suspected plot against Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz.
