U.S. federal immigration agents shot and wounded a man in a car with a five-year-old boy inside in New York City’s Bronx neighbourhood on Thursday, city officials, police and witnesses say.

The incident happened at around 16:00 local time, and the man’s wounds were not considered life-threatening.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said officers were carrying out a targeted operation to arrest a Dominican national with a prior criminal conviction, and that a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer discharged his weapon. DHS also alleged the man has associations with the Dominican American Trinitarios gang.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man had been arrested twice in the city, in 2023 and 2025.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated agents surrounded the vehicle and fired multiple rounds with the child inside. The boy was physically unharmed, and police later found him with a family member.

Mamdani said he had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to negotiate the man’s release, but the talks failed. He demanded that ICE halt enforcement in New York.

Pedro Almarez, who works at a nearby restaurant, said he heard shots and saw three or four cars of ICE officers.

He said NYPD officers arrived about ten minutes later, and the man was removed from his car only once an ambulance arrived. A woman on a balcony told officers that agents were “taking our children,” a witness reported.

At least 21 people have been shot by federal immigration agents since Trump returned to office in January 2025, seven of them fatally.

Critics have said Trump’s push to ramp up deportations has driven more violent confrontations and that agents face little accountability. Trump has said many migrants must be deported, often blaming them in sweeping terms for fraud and violent crime.
