A retired Australian builder has arrived in Baku in his 1929 Pontiac Roadster during an epic journey from Bangkok to Istanbul, using the nearly century-old car to raise money for Parkinson’s research.
Rick Lindsay restored the Pontiac after finding it abandoned under a tree in Australia. He bought the car from its owner and worked on it during the COVID-19 pandemic, when his work as a builder had slowed.
“I actually found it under a tree,” Lindsay said. “I bought it from the guy who owned it and did it up a bit during COVID.”
Lindsay’s journey has taken him thousands of kilometres across Asia, with Azerbaijan the latest stop. From Baku, he plans to head through Georgia before continuing to Istanbul.
The drive is about more than the challenge of taking a 1929 car across continents. Lindsay is also raising money for Parkinson’s research.
He said his travels had given him a greater understanding of the condition and strengthened his determination to support research efforts.
“So we're raising money for this research, and they're so close to getting it,” Lindsay said. “It's literally months away. So I'm trying to raise as much money as possible to help the scientists and the researchers get to this stage.”
Driving a nearly 100-year-old Pontiac over such long distances has brought its own challenges.
The vintage car has wooden wheels and an ageing fuel system, among other mechanical issues. Lindsay said he is not a mechanic, but carries enough tools to deal with problems along the way.
“This car is nearly 100 years old, and you can imagine there's a few problems with the wooden wheels, there's problems with the fuel system,” he said.
Lindsay now plans to take the Pontiac into the hills of Azerbaijan before crossing into Georgia and heading towards Istanbul, the final destination of a journey combining adventure with a drive to support Parkinson’s research.
