Six people have died after a two-storey residential building in a tourist area of central Athens collapsed, the Greek fire brigade said on Saturday (26 September), following an explosion that the mayor said was likely linked to gas infrastructure.
The blast on Friday destroyed a two-storey building in Plaka, near some of Athens' most visited sites, including the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. Three people were injured, while nearby houses, shops and cars were damaged.
Emergency crews, assisted by rescue dogs, searched for an elderly couple who lived in one apartment and four tourists staying in another.
The body of a young woman was found early on Saturday as rescuers cleared rubble from the building, which was reduced to twisted metal, broken balconies and hanging concrete slabs, a fire brigade official said.
The explosion killed four Americans, U.S. officials said. The tourists, two American couples, had been expected to catch a flight from Athens airport at 3 p.m. on Friday but did not show up, a police source said.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of four American citizens in yesterday’s explosion in central Athens,” Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, posted on X.
It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion in the area, which is home to many hotels and short-term rentals.
