French President Emmanuel Macron has left open the possibility of seeking the presidency again after he leaves office next year, saying he “doesn’t exclude anything” when asked about a possible third mandate.
Macron said he would leave office in May 2027 after completing his second consecutive term, adding that France’s Constitution would require voters to choose a new president.
“Let’s be clear: under our Constitution, you are entitled to two consecutive terms. So I will finish my term next May, and the French people will elect somebody else,” Macron said in an interview with U.S. magazine Variety.
“But I don’t exclude anything. It’s quite unusual to come back, but we will see. Life is inventive, sometimes more than movies,” he added.
The interview was recorded on 7 September during the Lumiere Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in southern France and aired on Friday 25 September.
France’s Constitution prevents a president from serving more than two consecutive terms.
Macron was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, meaning he cannot seek a third consecutive term in the 2027 presidential election.
A return to the presidency after sitting out a term would not be barred by the two-consecutive-term limit.
Macron, who will be 49 when he leaves office, has previously indicated that he would not pursue a political career after his presidency.
“I did not do politics before (the presidency) and I will not do it after,” he said in April.
However his latest comments leave open the possibility of a return to politics and potentially the presidency after his departure from office.
