Türkiye's Erdoğan calls for UN reform, condemns Gaza situation
Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan said the UN had become unable to fulfil its duty of preserving peace and called for reform of the Security Council. He condemned the situation in Gaza, saying those with “humanity, compassion and mercy” could not turn a blind eye to what was happening there. Erdoğan also said Türkiye was maintaining contacts with Russia and Ukraine over Black Sea navigation.
French President Emmanuel Macron criticised the situation in Gaza, saying the lack of humanitarian corridors was “a spectacle that should shame everybody”. He also called for stronger support for Ukraine ahead of winter, including more missile and drone interceptors and a moratorium on attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure.
UK's Burnham warns of Russian disinformation
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham accused Russian agencies of using bots, fake websites and forged branding to spread “lies and disinformation” in the UK. He said Russia had amplified far-right narratives and that there was evidence it tried to interfere in the 2019 general election, allegations Moscow rejects.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged world leaders to use the UN General Assembly to push for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic dialogue in the Middle East. “The fighting must stop. Humanitarian aid must flow,” Guterres said, while warning that civilians continued to pay the price of conflicts across the region. He also called for a multilateral artificial intelligence risk management framework.
