Poland has sharply criticised Israel’s handling of an investigation into the killing of Polish aid worker Damian Sobol, saying the decision to end proceedings has deepened concerns over accountability for the Israeli military’s conduct in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and what he described as a lack of accountability for the Israeli military’s “excessive use of force” were undermining public support for Israel, even in countries generally supportive of it.
“Partnership requires mutual respect,” Sikorski wrote on X. “The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, as well as the failure of accountability for IDF’s excessive use of force are undermining public support in even pro-Israel nations.”
His comments followed the Polish Foreign Ministry’s expression of “great disappointment” over the Israeli military authorities’ decision to end proceedings over the April 2024 attack on a World Central Kitchen aid convoy.
The convoy was struck in Gaza on 1 April 2024, killing seven humanitarian workers, including Sobol, a Polish national.
Poland said it was informed on 19 August that the Israeli military had decided to close the proceedings. Warsaw subsequently summoned Israel’s ambassador and formally raised concerns about the investigation.
The Polish Foreign Ministry said it expected Israel to provide its investigators with all requested information and documentation needed to establish what happened.
“The circumstances in which the tragedy occurred in 2024 should be fully clarified,” the ministry said, adding that it would not accept “the perpetrators' evasion of legal and moral responsibility”.
It also said the victims’ families deserved appropriate redress.
Polish authorities are pursuing their own investigation through the District Prosecutor’s Office in Przemysl.
The case has become another point of tension between Poland and Israel as international scrutiny of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza continues.
