Trump questions cause of deadly mid-air collision over Potomac river

President Donald Trump has suggested that the midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport "should have been prevented."

Initially, Trump issued a statement offering prayers for the victims as emergency teams continued search and recovery efforts in the Potomac River. Later, in a post on Truth Social, he raised questions about the crash, noting that the airplane was on a routine approach and visible on a clear night.

"The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn?" Trump wrote. He also questioned why air traffic controllers did not intervene more decisively.

The president later added: "What a terrible night this has been. God bless you all!"

The collision, which occurred just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, has prompted a federal investigation. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the crash.
