U.S. President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a "historic" agreement to end the war in Gaza, saying his Board of Peace had secured a deal for the phased disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in the enclave.
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said the agreement would mark "a monumental step toward lasting peace and security" and pave the way for a new phase in Gaza's governance.
According to Trump, the proposed framework would see Hamas gradually surrender its weapons while Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza in stages. An International Stabilisation Force would work alongside a newly organised Palestinian police force before a new Palestinian governing authority assumes responsibility for administering the territory.
Trump also thanked Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye for their mediation efforts.
Despite Trump's announcement, neither Hamas nor Israel has officially confirmed that an agreement has been reached.
Reuters reported that negotiations in Cairo have made rare progress in recent days, but an Israeli official said the proposed terms remain unsatisfactory, indicating that key differences have yet to be resolved.
On another hand, Al Jazeera reported that a senior Hamas official told the broadcaster a deal had been reached to end the conflict with Israel. However, Hamas has not issued an official public statement confirming the reported breakthrough.
The future of Hamas' military wing has long been one of the most contentious issues in negotiations over Gaza's post-war future.
Previous versions of the U.S.-backed proposal called for Hamas to disarm in phases, dismantle its military infrastructure and transfer security responsibilities to a Palestinian technocratic administration. In return, Israeli forces would withdraw gradually as security benchmarks are met, with governance eventually handed to a new Palestinian authority supported by regional and international partners.
Israel has repeatedly insisted that Hamas must fully disarm before ending the war, while Hamas has consistently rejected surrendering its weapons without guarantees of a complete Israeli withdrawal and a lasting political settlement.
