Spain are world champions for the second time after Ferran Torres' extra-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Torres struck in the 106th minute, finishing first time after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro's cross into his path, finally beating Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who had produced a series of outstanding saves throughout the match.
Spain dominated possession and chances from the opening whistle but were repeatedly denied by Martínez, who made 12 saves to keep the defending champions in the contest.
Argentina's hopes suffered a major blow when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of normal time, forcing Lionel Scaloni's side to play extra time with ten men.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Argentina held firm until Torres' decisive strike delivered Spain's first World Cup title since 2010.
The victory also capped a remarkable tournament for Luis de la Fuente's side, who conceded just one goal throughout the competition, the fewest by any World Cup-winning team in tournament history.
The final marked another milestone for Lionel Messi, who became the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup final at 39 years and 25 days, while also becoming only the second player after Brazil's Cafu to feature in three World Cup finals.
Torres was named Player of the Match, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his squad after adding the World Cup to their recent European Championship success.
"We have won everything, and that is wonderful," de la Fuente said.
"They are a generation of footballers who are a source of pride for Spain," he concluded.
