Daybreak | 17 July 2026

On 17 July, AnewZ's Daybreak focused on renewed U.S. strikes on Iran, the suspension of one of President Donald Trump's teleprompter aides and Volodymyr Zelenskyy's appointment of an acting defence minister.

Middle East tensions

The United States launched a sixth consecutive night of strikes, targeting Iranian military sites. Washington said the action followed attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and announced a renewed naval blockade.

Iran said it had targeted U.S. bases and facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan with missiles and drones. The renewed fighting has pushed last month's truce closer to collapse despite continued diplomatic contacts.

A four-year truce has broken down after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of bombing an airport under their control and fired missiles at the kingdom. The group warned that any further escalation by Riyadh would trigger direct military retaliation.

Europe developments

Ukraine's security services struck two sanctioned Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea as Russia launched a guided bomb attack on Zaporizhzhia, killing at least three civilians.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy appointed Security Service chief Yehanei Kamra as acting defence minister following the dismissal of Mikhail Fedorov, as Kyiv seeks to reform its defence sector.

Greece's Aegean islands are facing worsening water shortages, with drought emergencies forcing authorities to prioritise supplies for tourists over irrigation.

In other news, more than 400 people have been evacuated as a wildfire in Spain's Aragón region has burned more than 4,500 hectares, with firefighters battling the blaze amid strong winds.

Global headlines

The programme also covered the latest international developments, including President Donald Trump's primetime White House address, in which he accused China of interfering in the 2020 U.S. elections.

Daybreak also reported that a longtime White House teleprompter operator had been placed on unpaid leave over insider trading allegations. Elsewhere, eleven people, including children, were killed and 19 others were injured in a fire at an orphanage near Algiers.
