The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for three people missing after a pontoon boat capsized near Alcatraz, leaving four people dead or presumed dead.

A triple-deck pontoon boat carrying about 20 people capsized and sank near Alcatraz Island after being struck by a large wave, authorities said.

The accident happened in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday. One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while divers and other emergency crews began searching for three missing passengers.

The Coast Guard said it suspended the search around sunset on Wednesday after hopes of finding survivors in the frigid waters had faded, leaving the three missing people presumed dead.

Good Samaritans in nearby vessels, including fishermen, helped rescue people clinging to the side of the sinking boat before emergency teams arrived.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victims. Local television station KPIX-TV reported that the person pronounced dead was the boat captain's brother, and that the missing passengers were the captain's sister, sister-in-law and a friend.

A Coast Guard official said some passengers were below deck when the vessel was hit sideways by the wave and overturned, possibly trapping people inside as it sank.
