Five adults were killed in a shooting at a youth welfare facility in northern Germany on Monday, with police detaining two people, including the suspected gunman.

Motive remains unclear

The shooting happened in the town of Stade, west of the port city of Hamburg.

Police said the motive was not immediately known.

A police spokesperson said two people had been taken into custody, including the suspected shooter. The role of the second person remained unclear, another spokesperson told Reuters, adding that officers were not looking for any other suspects.

Authorities have not confirmed how many people were injured. Police said all five of those killed were adults.

Following the shooting, officers urged residents to avoid the area while investigations continued.

Rare but high-profile attacks

Mass shootings are relatively uncommon in Germany, particularly when compared with the U.S., but the country has experienced several high-profile attacks in recent years.

In 2023, a gunman in Hamburg shot dead six people before killing himself at a Jehovah's Witness worship hall.

In 2016, an 18-year-old German-Iranian man who was obsessed with mass killings murdered at least nine people in Munich.
