At least four people have been killed in a major Ukrainian drone attack on Russian territory, including the Moscow region, which authorities say faced its largest aerial assault in more than a year.

Russian officials reported that three people were killed in the Moscow region and one in the Belgorod region on Sunday (17 May), as air defences intercepted dozens of drones approaching the capital and surrounding areas.

According to Moscow regional governor Andrei Vorobyov, a woman was killed when a residential home was struck in Khimki, north of Moscow.

He said rescue teams were searching through debris for another missing person.

In a separate incident, two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district. Several residential buildings and infrastructure sites were also damaged, authorities said.

Moscow’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defence systems destroyed 81 drones targeting the capital since midnight, describing it as the largest attack on Moscow in more than a year.

He also said 12 people were injured, most of them near the entrance to an oil refinery in the city area.

While debris reportedly fell near the facility, he said the refinery’s core “technology” was not damaged.

Russia’s defence ministry said a total of 556 drones were intercepted across the country overnight and into the morning, indicating a widespread coordinated attack across multiple regions.

In Moscow, debris from downed drones reportedly fell onto Sheremetyevo Airport, one of the country’s largest aviation hubs, though authorities said no damage was recorded and operations were not disrupted.

There was no immediate public comment from Ukrainian authorities on the latest Russian claims.
