Washington: Iran's nuclear programme non-negotiable, as Tehran deepens strategic ties with Moscow
The White House said that dismantling Iran's nuclear programme is a non-negotiable red line that must be included in any initial ceasefire agreement to end the Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, Tehran has sought to bolster its international alliances; following a weekend of shuttle diplomacy in Pakistan and Oman, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to St Petersburg to secure diplomatic backing from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
U.S. and Iran clash at UN over nuclear non-proliferation role
The United States and Iran have clashed at the United Nations following Tehran's selection as a vice president for a month-long conference reviewing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). A senior U.S. arms control official branded the appointment by non-aligned states as "beyond shameful" and an "affront" to the treaty, citing Iran’s alleged contempt for non-proliferation commitments and its refusal to fully cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog. Iran's ambassador dismissed the remarks as baseless and politically motivated.
Trump reportedly unhappy with Iran's latest ceasefire proposal
Tehran's proposal reportedly seeks to resolve the costly blockade of the Strait of Hormuz whilst delaying any discussions regarding its nuclear programme until a later stage. However, Washington maintains that nuclear issues must be addressed from the outset, as global oil prices continue to rise over the strategic maritime chokepoint remaining severely constrained.
UK's King Charles arrives in U.S. amidst diplomatic strain and security fears
King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Washington for an historic four-day state visit, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. declaration of independence and the first trip by a British monarch in two decades. The long-planned visit has been overshadowed by significant diplomatic friction, fuelled by President Trump's fierce criticism of the UK's refusal to support the U.S. offensive in Iran, and heightened security concerns following an alleged assassination attempt on President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday.
Suspect charged with attempted assassination of President Trump
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump during a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday. Appearing in a Washington federal court, prosecutors alleged that the California native, who described himself in an email to relatives as the "Friendly Federal Assassin", breached a security checkpoint armed with a pump-action shotgun, a handgun, and three knives before being tackled by law enforcement.
