Five people have been killed and 19 others injured in a Russian drone strike on a market in the front-line Ukrainian city of Nikopol, Ukrainian officials say.
The attack happened on Saturday morning, with Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office describing it as "yet another war crime committed by the Russian Federation" in a statement on Telegram.
Nikopol lies on the western bank of the Dnipro River, directly opposite Russian-occupied territory, and has been repeatedly targeted since the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Frontline city under constant threat
The city, in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, is considered particularly vulnerable due to its position across the river from the largely Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia region.
Local authorities have repeatedly warned residents about the risks of gathering in open public spaces such as markets, which have been struck in previous attacks.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene, with images shared by officials showing damaged market stalls and debris scattered across the area.
Pattern of attacks on civilian areas
Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, transport hubs and marketplaces. Russia denies targeting civilians.
Strikes on public areas have drawn international condemnation throughout the conflict, with rights groups documenting incidents that may amount to violations of international humanitarian law.
The latest strike comes amid continued fighting along multiple sections of the front line, with both sides reporting intensified drone and artillery attacks in recent weeks.
