Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight on Saturday, marking the second such strike in less than a week, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine’s Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said the attacks targeted the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants in western Ukraine, as well as substations and overhead transmission lines.

As a precautionary measure, personnel unloaded units at nuclear power plants following the strikes, Shmyhal said.

Ukraine’s state-run energy operator Ukrenergo requested emergency assistance from Poland in the aftermath of the attack, while the company imposed emergency power outages across most of the country.

The latest strikes follow a previous attack on Ukraine’s energy facilities carried out on Tuesday, highlighting renewed pressure on the country’s power system as the war continues.

Authorities did not immediately provide details on casualties or the extent of the damage.
